Kiasmos (full performance on KEXP)

Honest representation demands that I acknowledge these facts:

There is an almost absurb amount of button-pushin' and knob-twiddlin' in Kiasmos' full performance video currently hosted on YouTube by KEXP in Seattle. Available 24 hours a day, always absolutely free (with ads).

You will also notice that these guys have had more than their individual recommended servings of caffeine, taurine, pure cane sugar, nothing illegal, mind you...

It took a few moments before I really got a feel for what Kiasmos is doing but after that point I recognized pure genius where I was seeing/hearing it.

Okay, was that three? Was the one an actual question or a thinly veiled attempt to elicit a response rooted in your political ideology. I'm going to say 'Three' and just let it be. That way I can move on to whatever else I thought I might have to say about this duo.

As I was saying...may take a few moments to acclimate your hearing mechanism to what they're offering, once again, free...free for all, free, free fallin', free, free like the Internet used to be free. Not for lack of quality, mind you, do they offer these treasures free of charge. Shame on you if you really think they'd stoop so low. You're going to end up liking them, even if you said something snide about the dude with the long hair, how he maybe looked just a little TOO happy and how you thought the pale white dude in the Fruit of the Loom undershirt stole his moves from New Order frontman Barney Sumner, although in his defense skinny white dude twiddlin' knobs injects a few syringes full of adrenaline into Barney's own skinny white ass. Makes him groove a little harder like he had something to lose...as if he had anything worth losing. I don't know why I said that. I was trying to be clever but I can plainly see now, after the fact, that it was incredibly lame, certainly the farthest thing from anything remotely resembling "funny". See how enthusiastically I waste time, procrastinating or is that more like wading through a murky fog of writer's block.

Kiasmos. Like you I never heard of 'em before...oh, let's see, 30 minutes ago? And yet I'm already a fan of their music. Never boring even in it's serene moments. Some of those calm passages truly cross over into the realm of the sublime.

But thing that most strikes me about this Kiasmos performance is the sheer, pure joy and ecstasy of creating, of creating soundscapes and surrounding them with sampled and synthesized symphonies, all of it weaving in patterns from melody to melody, their style is unique, something I haven't heard before. From my descriptions here you probably have surmised that Kiasmos is a duo that plays electronic music. I could be wrong but I don't think their work falls under the heading of EDM, although there is certainly a strong dance element it is not the predominant attraction in their music. They are masters of the swell. Their use of dynamics, layering and drum programs is tasteful, effective...
