Surprisingly refreshing, Laura Veirs and her band share a special chemistry that effortlessly facilitates an utterly unique, hauntingly pure sound. Though she has a few albums under her belt (all of which I'm eager to hear) I have only just discovered her music through the new full length, The Lookout. Watch this video of it's opener "Margaret Sands" and see what I mean:
Veirs has a keen ear for a striking melody. Spot-on harmonies that have the power to conjure countless goosebumps. There is a variety to the songs that keeps things interesting, you never get bored or even distracted if you're deep enough into it's too-short 38 minute running time. A track featuring Sufjan Stevens and a mostly faithful rendering of the Grateful Dead's early psych-folk chestnut "Mountains of the Moon" should pique the interest of not a few discriminating listeners. But the real treasures here are Viers crystalline voice, the accomplished songwriting and the laid back, confident performance. I'm currently listening to her last album, Warp and Weft and by the time the 4th track has even ended I find myself firmly embedded into her fanbase. I already used the word "refreshing" but it's true, I rarely come across an album from an artist that impresses me on such a stellar level after such a miniscule period of exposure. Laura Viers will be in very heavy rotation in this ol' boys Spotify queue.
