The first time I heard "Comrade" was via this video from Pitchfork's City of Music Series. It was like an epiphany, as I immediately recognized that this song was going to very soon be one of my all time favorites. That was almost 3 years ago and since then I've listened to the studio version so many times I couldn't count them. I don't think there's been a single instance where I've played this song without being compelled to sing along, figuring out the lyrics in the process. Especially love getting into the last few lines (if you know the song you know what I'm talking about). I still don't know quite all the words but I've got most of them...correctly for that matter, as Internet lyric sites are prone to screwing up practically every song they transcribe (all those sites have singer Justin Vernon singing "Semper Fi" for the third line, a propos of nothing, whereas I am about 99% sure it's "Simplify", or "Simplified", which is still most likely a propos of nothing but just seems to fit a lot better to me...I don't think this is a song about Marines). Tonight I played the video again for the first time probably since early 2014 with the perspective of deep familiarity with the studio version and I gotta say they really do a fantastic job of translating it into a "live" setting. Vernon's performance is galvanizing. I couldn't help myself, I just had to post it.
